Marketers Unite Against Spam

from the yet-another-attempt... dept

Yet another industry consotrium has formed to try to beat spam. Surprisingly, this consortium is made up of direct marketing email companies who say that spam is giving them a bad name. Their strategy is to work with ISPs and set up a standard "registry" that will require senders of bulk mail to identify themselves. Then, spammers can more easily be blocked. It's an interesting idea, though, the it would help if there were more details. I like the fact that the average emailer wouldn't have to do anything. I don't like the fact that all ISPs would need to support this - because that might be a lot to ask. I also wonder how hard it will be for spammers to somehow get around this by pretending not to be mailing "bulk" emails.
