321 Studios Case Goes To Trial

from the DVD-copying-legality dept

Well, we should soon have another legal decision that will impact the technology world. This week the case of Hollywood vs. 321 Studios will finally go to court. 321 Studios makes software to let people copy their DVDs to make backup copies. They've actually built safeguards into the software to make it harder to use their tools for making a large number of copies - suggesting the software really is designed for personal "fair use" applications. Of course, Hollywood doesn't want anyone to ever touch their DVDs, and are suing under the DMCA (of course) saying that 321 Studios has broken their encryption.
