EMI May Be Investigated By Australian Competition Watchdog For Copy Protection
from the can't-lie-to-consumers dept
Over in Australia, thanks to a complaining consumer, Australia's version of the FTC, the ACCC, is considering investigating EMI for their practice of putting copy protection on CDs. A consumer complained that the CDs aren't playing the high quality sound he paid for when played in a computer CD player - suggesting that they're violating the redbook specs and not making that clear to consumers when they purchase the CDs. EMIs response appears to basically be "yeah, we're doing that, but it's for experimentation purposes, so who cares." Not exactly the most consumer-friendly policy, but since when has the music industry been consumer friendly?
