Australian Hacker Gets No Punishment

from the fine-line dept

While the US will lock up a hacker for years without even charging him, it appears that Australia is willing to simply release admitted hackers if they can prove that they did what they did for "intellectual pursuit". While the article quotes some security firm saying this sends out the wrong message, I wish the article had more details about what the guy did. It sounds like he didn't do any actual damage. I wonder, though, if he did this to help them close a security hole, or if he didn't tell them about it once he discovered it.
