Quick Turnaround: Cookie Patent Granted, Lawsuits Underway

from the no-time-to-waste,-gotta-sue-sue-sue dept

Some lawyers over at F5 certainly don't like to waste any time. At approximately the same time they were granted a patent on a specific type of browser cookie, they turned around and sued three companies for violating it. I guess they didn't even want to run through the standard legal looking letter "here are our insane licensing terms" dance. The specific patent is for a persistent cookie that will connect a user to the same server they were on before. Thus, such cookies are useful for any company that uses multiple servers and wants to make sure returning visitors are connected to the same one. Do we really need any more evidence that our current patent system is doing more to slow down innovation in many cases than to help speed it along?
