LookSmart Searches For Volunteer PCs
from the can't-beat-Google-with-servers,-so-gotta-get-more-people dept
LookSmart appears to be jumping on the whole "distributed computing" craze a bit late (no one even calls it distributed computing anymore). They're looking for "volunteers" just like those messing around with SETI@Home, distributed.net, or any one of the thousands of copycat programs that are solving some sort of a problem by using spare cycles on volunteer computers. In the case of LookSmart, they'll be using the volunteers to spider the internet for their own search results. This doesn't seem quite as compelling as searching for aliens or finding a cure for cancer.
