Visa Orders Card Numbers Masked

from the good-idea-or-just-marketing-hype dept

theodp writes "In an effort to thwart financial identity theft, credit-card issuer Visa USA said Thursday that it will force merchants that take Visa payments to display only the last four digits of a card number on receipts." As the article points out, there were a number of reasons for doing this, including a similar plan by rival MasterCard, and the possibility of legislation that would require this anyway.

California is already doing this: as of Jan 1 2004, merchants with relatively new registers can only print the last four digits of your credit card number on the reciept. Older machines will have a little more time to comply, and handwritten charge slips may still contain your full number.
