China's Web Surveillance Slows Access

from the not-very-scaleable,-apparently dept

The fact that China monitors and censors internet usage is not a surprising story any more. However, the latest report says all that monitoring activity is slowing down the internet throughout China. Users say they have the most trouble reaching foreign websites early in the morning when everyone logs on from work. There are times when it is impossible to reach popular sites like Google or Hotmail (though, as was well publicized, there was a time when China was blocking Google entirely). Of course, this problem is likely to get worse as internet usage grows in China - which is something the government is actually pushing right now.
