AOL Claims Record Block Of Spam E-Mails

from the and-yet...-so-many-still-get-through dept

AOL is making headlines today for announcing that in one 24 hour period they blocked 1 billion spam messages. Of course, that number is somewhat meaningless. First of all, depending on how "loose" the filters are, plenty of those messages could be legit (though, AOL says it's "an extremely small fraction"). Even if this is the case, AOL has so many members (and so many members who have plastered their email address everywhere) that it's no surprise they get hit with ridiculous amounts of spam. What I'm curious about is how many spams still get through to AOL users. From what I've heard anecdotally, they AOL users are still constantly bombarded by spam.

    No Subject Given

I wonder if they are couting all the bounces they get from spammers using AOL addresses as the return path for their spam. That could add up to a billion in a hurry.
