Google Buys Pyra: Blogging Goes Big-Time

from the wow dept

This is a bit of a surprise, but it turns out that Google has bought Pyra, makers of the ever-popular Blogger software. It's a little unclear what they'll do with Blogger, but I can only imagine it will be good. In the past Google has always been good for bloggers in giving them high rankings in its regular searches. Involving blogging as a bigger part of Google News could be very useful. Should be interesting to watch... Update: With the debates going on all over the place about what Google intends to do with Blogger, someone just sent me the following "notes" from a talk that Larry Page of Google gave last week. In it, he mentions that Google was originally intended to be an annotation system, where it would let people read comments about the site they were viewing - and look at how "authoritative" those comments were. If you look at Blogger as an annotation system, combined with Google's PageRank system (named after Larry, of course), suddenly the possibilities become more interesting.
