.Edu Expands
from the to-diploma-mills? dept
The US Commerce Department has decided that the .edu domain has become too exclusive, and thus are opening it up to beauty, theological and distance-learning schools among others. Not surprisingly, some are worried that this "cheapens" the domain. I'm not sure that's really an issue. I would, however, be worried that a diploma mill type place could somehow sneak its way into getting a .edu domain (hey, if someone could fake their way into a .gov site, anything is possible), and use that to pretend that they're a legitimate school. Otherwise, I'm thinking it's about time for Techdirt.edu. I'm sure we could teach people a thing or two...
