ElcomSoft Redux For eBook Crackers?

from the this-sounds-familiar dept

The Register has the story of a guy who is trying to crack Microsoft eBooks so that he can read them on his older Win CE device. He claims that he just wants to be able to read eBooks that are legally purchased on a machine that doesn't support the eBook software. The article points out the similarities between this and the ElcomSoft case. It also seems similar to the DeCSS case to allow Linux boxes to watch DVDs. While ElcomSoft (amazingly) came out of the court case vindicated, the Register isn't so optimistic for those cracking MS eBooks. Once again, we have people who are facing all sorts of legal problems for simply wanting to use their own fair use rights. There are completely legitimate reasons for wanting to be able to view an eBook on alternate devices.
