IT Group Critical Of Digital TV Rules

from the yes,-but... dept

Just sat through a pretty interesting session at Supernova listening to Cory Doctorow argue with Listen.com's Sean Ryan about copy protection (with some comments from TiVo's Morgan Guenther). Following that the first thing I see over at News.com is that an IT group is arguing that they shouldn't be responsible for handicapping their devices with copy protection for digital TV - and that the responsibility should be up to the broadcasters themselves to encrypt the content from their end. Of course, based on what I just heard, I'd assume Cory would make the point that this argument misses the point. These are two industry groups discussing how best to prevent people from making use of their fair use rights. So, while it looks like they're arguing over what's best, there isn't any represenation from the people who actually use this stuff: the consumers.
