EBay, Amazon Duke It Out For Online Shoppers

from the direct-competition dept

It's no surprise to anyone these days that the two big "winners" of the e-commerce battles are Amazon and eBay. However, it's becoming increasingly clear that the two companies are on a competitive collision path. While this has certainly been true for a while, the SJ Merc has a good look at how the two companies are fighting more and more battles directly against each other. The types of shoppers each attract are somewhat different, but that's likely to change over time.

  • The Montgomery Ward of e-shopping

Amazon and e-bay will give their obligatory tough rhetoric about "cutthroat competition" and "survival". In reality, they will converge toward a duopoly; once smaller general retailers have been crushed, they will become the Sears and Montgomery Ward of internet shopping, with its terrible customer service and satanic fraud.

Fact is, the average person is not going to order new jeans off the internet; s/he will go to the store to try them. The internet is useful only for unusual merchandise that cannot be found in local stores. E-commerce offers no particular advantages over traditional mail order catalogues.
