Yahoo Opens Launchcast To IM Barrage

from the making-life-difficult dept

In the latest questionable move by Yahoo to make life more difficult for users rather than more enjoyable, they've set up their IM system, such that if you use their Launchcast programming and indicate you like an artist or song, you are suddenly fair game to receive unsolicted instant messages from other fans of that artist or song. This is turned on by default, and they don't make it clear how to turn it off. While there are some people out there who have no problem sitting around waiting to talk to other teenagers about their favorite pop artist, many of us would rather not be disturbed. It's bothersome that Yahoo's latest policies tend towards annoying their users as much as possible, rather than making things more enjoyable.

To test it, I just rated a couple artists that I'd had around 85 up to 100, and I didn't show up in either's fan lists before or after. It looks like you only show up in the fan list if you've shared your station (which I haven't).

Ah. That's good to know. Of course, it would be nicer if that were clearly explained up front, but it's definitely good to hear that it's not as bad as it sounded.
