Tech, Counterfeiting & Terrorism

from the bring-on-the-FUD dept

mw writes "Rapid advances in scanning, printing and other technologies have made counterfeiting a new primary tool for terrorists. According to a new Business 2.0 story, American companies such as Xerox and Hewlett-Packard, have launched products that are helping terrorists in their forging initiatives. And now, highly-effective forgeries can be created by anyone with a $1000 scanner, computer and printer setup." I get a little annoyed when I read these articles that look to blame technology for making "bad" things easier, and this one moves in that direction at times.

    The Biggest Victims

The biggest victims of such forgeries are typically unwary people on the street, who are not trained to distinguish counterfeit bills or other documents.

Banks or other institutions are already trained in looking for telltale signs, such as the microprints, red-and-blue fabric imbedded in paper, or the watermarks. Such technology has been well controlled and continues to be so.
