IM Users: Your Boss Is Watching

from the you-have-no-privacy-anywhere dept

In the continuing saga of bosses who feel they simply can't trust their employees at all, lots of hype came out last week about AOL's new plan to offer enterprise instant messaging that will allow employers to store every instant message you send. While I might see why this makes sense in financial firms where it's more important to track what people are saying, for most firms this is simply overkill. In actively monitoring these things, the companies are hurting their own employees' ability to communicate within the company, and with those at other companies. It also makes their employees more paranoid, and less comfortable at work. All this, just in case they want to find out what you IM'd last Tuesday.
