How NYC Used A Computer System To Stop Crime

from the who-says-computers-are-bad? dept

It's clear by now that any time people want to keep something from getting out of control (for example weight or spending) it helps to have constant feedback. Computer software has been amazing in providing people and companies tools to see that sort feedback, as well as to organize it and analyze it. So, it shouldn't be any surprise to find out that one of the reasons New York City claims they've cut down on crime so much over the last decade is by using computer software to make sure they had constant feedback about what types of crimes were happening where. The system isn't very complex at all, but it provides police with the feedback they need to see where potential problem might arise. The end result is a much lower crime rate (and a much more enjoyable city to walk around in).
