Fake INS Web Sites Trick Immigrants

from the scams-for-people-of-every-nation dept

It's really amazing the extent people go to in order to create online scams. MSNBC has an article about a bunch of websites that are designed to trick non-US citizens into paying them to process their green card lottery application. The application process itself is completely free, but many of these make themselves look like the INS or some other official government agency and trick unsuspecting people into believing they're filling out the official form (and having to pay for it). Some of these sites actually do submit the form, but plenty just pocket the money and run.

They had a case in LA a few months ago, where conmen really outfitted an office as a "fast-track INS processing station" and a guy in judicial robes held "asylum hearings".
