Your Tutor In Cyberspace Is Standing By Now

from the help-goes-online dept

When I was both an undergrad and a grad student I made some extra money tutoring statistics, which was actually a lot of fun (and forced me to have an even better understanding of statistics than I ever did before). At the time, I remember thinking that there had to be a better way to connect students to tutors (I just had very limited office hours). It seems that the internet is filling in the blanks, as the NY Times has a story about how many students now look for tutors online to help them in all sorts of subjects any time. Just like when I used to tutor, there are always some students who simply want you to do their homework for them, but for many, it's a truly valuable resource.

Unfortunately, it is my experience that those who really need tutors don't use them, even when they are on line, and those who want you to do their homework for them do... At least the number of emails I used to get from folks looking for me to do their work for them were a lot higher than those who wanted to learn.
