AOL Begins AIM-Based Internet Safety Campaign For Kids

from the talking-to-strangers-online-is-dangerous dept

AOL is apparently promoting a new IMbot that will answer kids questions about internet safety. This seems exceptionally pointless to me. First of all, it's encouraging kids to ask an automated program about their own safety. Second, it seems to only respond to the most obvious of questions. Most of the problems stem from kids not even knowing that they might be in a dangerous situation - or, if they know, not caring that it might be dangerous. The IMbot helps in neither of those cases. Besides, if anything, shouldn't the IMbot be telling the kids that they shouldn't trust answers from an automated answermachine online?
