NTT Unit To Test Wireless VoIP
from the stand-here-to-make-a-call dept
Wireless carriers around the world are worried that Wi-Fi could cut into their 2.5/3G data revenues. But what about cutting into voice revenues? A division of NTT is launching a trial wireless voice over IP (VoIP) service using WLANs and PDAs. That is quite a savings, but if the service is based on WLAN technology, it will likely have limited coverage. Wi-Fi hotspots work for data because users access the network via a laptop and need a place to sit and work. But do you really want to find a hotspot to make a voice call?
