A Fortune reporter who is returning from Japan to read about the various 3G phone launches isn't impressed. He points out that, despite the hype, people aren't actually buying the 3G phones in Japan because both the phones and the service plans are way too expensive. No one really sees a compelling reason to upgrade - and he thinks the same is true in the US. About the only area where he sees 3G services becoming a big hit is in the phone sex industry where suddenly pictures and videos can go along with voices. So, all those billions of dollars to revolutionize the phone sex industry? Probably not what the telecom companies expected. Of course, eventually, it's likely that people will figure out how to use 3G systems for more compelling applications, but initially, it's not looking good.
