Australia Gets Cybercrime Code

from the who-needs-legislation-when-you've-got-a-code dept

Australian ISPs, hoping to avoid painful legislation have banded together and come up with a cybercrime "code" that has them all agreeing on how much data to store away concerning their customers, and how long they'll hang onto it - in order to feed that info over to the proper authorities should they demand it. It seems like such plans might put an undue burden on many ISPs - and the article mentions that some plan to hire people who will be in charge of "compliance" with the code. I wonder, though, what happens if a single rogue ISP decides to ignore the code and promote its service as one that doesn't snoop on users. It would seem like an opportunity for a shrewd business to slip in - and that would undermine the whole "code" concept.
