EU And UK Argue Over Snooping Law

The UK is running into some problems trying to force ISPs to record data on how its customers surf the internet. It seems that by doing so, ISPs would then be violating European Union laws to prevent this sort of thing. The EU law says that you can only record data for an extended period of time if a "demonstrable need" is shown, and even then it must be for as short a period of time as possible. The UK, on the other hand wants ISPs to "voluntarily" break that law and record all data from anyone for up to one year or more. Once again, the UK push has me wondering why someone doesn't explain to them that by recording more data they make it a lot more difficult to find the important data.
