Internet Addiction As Stress Management

from the avoid-everything dept

Unlike some recent studies on internet addiction that were clearly done to increase the profits of a single company, it seems that some researchers at York University have done some real research on internet addiction. They've found that about 2% to 3% of web surfers showed signs of addiction (much fewer than the 25% in the earlier report) and that most use the internet as a way to avoid stressful situations. It's a way to withdraw away from whatever stressors they have in their lives. This, of course, makes sense. It also suggests that it's not "internet addiction" that is the root cause of their problems - but other issues that drive them to the internet.
