Who Wants To Be A Computer Science Major These Days?

from the you-can't-get-chicks-with-that-anymore dept

The best quote I've heard in ages about why kids aren't going into computer science any more (well, I assume it's just the guy kids): "you can't get the chicks with that anymore." I'm not sure I remember a day when the CS folks were ever attracting women simply by being a CS person, but maybe I wasn't paying attention. Anyway, the Washington Post is looking at how computer science just isn't hip anymore, and fewer people are signing up to be a CS major in college any more. What's funny, is that I remember the same complaints all through the dot com boom as well. It's never been that easy to convince people to go into computer science, and despite the lure of dot com millions, I don't think that many people really became CS majors for the "glory". I also really don't have a problem with people going for other degrees if they think they're going to hate programming. Clearly, it's not for everyone, and telling people that we really need more programmers isn't going to make it an enjoyable career path for someone who isn't into it.

Apparently now is the time to go back for my masters degree if this is true, when I went through the first time Computer Science was an impacted major, meaning that it was so full of students there was a waiting list to get into most of the CS classes, and you couldn't declare yourself as a CS major on transfer (your transfer would be denied,) and had to come in as something else, then sneakily change your major over to CS after one semester.

If nobody is interested in becoming a CS major any more, then it will be far easier for me to get in to the masters classes....

Somehow I doubt that is true though...just because a well respected media outlet says it is.
