HP Threatens DMCA Action Against Researchers Who Find Hole In Their Tech

from the shoot-the-messenger dept

Well, we all knew that sooner or later another case would come along to show just how stupid the DMCA law is. It seems we may have just found a winner. HP is threatening a group of researchers who publicized a security hole in their software with violating the DMCA. As someone in the group pointed out, "We are like the guys that found out that Firestone tires have issues on Ford Explorers. It's not our fault your Explorer has crap tires. We just pointed it out. We should not get attacked for pointing out issues in someone’s product nor for proving it is possible." Admittedly, the group says they didn't mean to release the info yet, but they had told HP about it a while ago - and they hadn't fixed it yet.

And wasn't it HP that stopped Bruce Perens for doing his "flaunt the DMCA" presentation recently? Maybe there was more to this than HP wanting to avoid setting themselves up as a lawsuit target (which really never made any sense).
