Bill Introduced To Save Small Webcasters

from the good-in-theory dept

Would you believe it? A bill was introducted today in Congress that goes against the wishes of the entertainment industry. It's the Internet Radio Fairness Act, and is designed to protect small webcasters from the painfully high fees that were to be imposed on them this fall. The basic proposal is that any only webcaster with under $6 million in revenue shouldn't have to pay those fees. Of course, I'm sure the RIAA will flip out about this. I'm also not sure how I feel about a law that singles out smaller companies for different treatment than larger companies. A better solution might be to set up the fees in a fair way that doesn't put a ridiculous burden on everyone. The article points out, though, that with very little time left in this Congressional session, it's unlikely that the bill will get anywhere.
