Trademark Applications As Economic Indicator

Sometimes I'm amazed at what the latest "tea leaves" people come up with to try to predict how the economy is doing. The latest economic indicator being discussed is that trademark applications are trending upwards suggesting that (maybe) more companies are being started, or more new products are being released. Certainly an interesting bit of info, but I'm not sure it's really indicative of anything useful.
