Will Internet Radio Go Away?

from the it-would-be-unfortunate dept

With all the talk recently about how much internet radio stations should pay in royalties, there is the question of whether or not internet radio will survive. While I agree that the original attempts at charging royalties were misguided and likely to do much more harm than good, I'm willing to bet that web radio will figure out a way to stick around. This article gives a few examples of web radio stations that couldn't make money - which struck me more as business model issues than issues having to do with paying royalties. Once again, I think this is a business model decision, and not a legal one. If the record labels were smart, they would realize that internet radio is (potentially) a great promotional tool, and encourage it - rather than trying to force most of them to shut down.
