Napster And The Music Industry

from the time-to-change dept

The beginning of this article seems a little silly since it sounds like they needed some professors to tell us that Napster is unlikely to ever get back to the prominence it once had. However, the rest of the article is much more interesting as those same professors try to explain to the music industry why they're making a huge mistake trying to block Napster and Napster-like applications (the URL is a temporary one; assuming a permanent URL shows up, I'll change it). They point out that downloaded music can act as advertising for CDs or other elements of the music business, and whether the music industry likes it or not, the technology is here to stay. They simply won't be able to legislate it out of existence.
