Eliminating Wireless Browsers

from the browsers!-we-don't-need-no-stinkin'-browsers! dept

Part of the reason for WAP's troubles (there are many) is that the web browsing experience doesn't translate well on mobile phones. Opera, the makers of the alternative desktop browsers, have latched onto this idea and announced they are supporting Symbian's Magpie initiative. Through Magpie the Opera Symbian browser can act as a compenent to to other Symbian apps. This way content is pulled from the web but displayed in the appropriate application. For example weather would be displayed in the calendar and online address searches would be done via the address book.

Ahh, so Cyberdog might finally make it!

If Microsoft had gone for this kind of approach I might have actually been sympathetic to their "critical component of the O/S" argument.
