Getting Off The Web Services Hype

from the it's-nice,-but-it's-not-huge dept

SF Gate has yet another article looking at web services. It does an okay job explaing what they are (though, I've seen some better explanations), but does point out what a number of folks have thought was obvious from the beginning: yes, web services are going to be useful for any number of things - but the level of hype behind them makes no sense. Web services are simply a way to connect applications to each other. Of course, when it's put that way, it sounds boring, and the tech industry doesn't like boring. So they slap on the name "web services" and it sounds exciting - even though most people think web services means something completely different than it really means.
