P3P Gets W3C Blessing

from the automating-privacy-protection dept

The W3C has apparently recommended the P3P privacy standard, which isn't that big of a surprise. P3P is designed to "automate" the checking of privacy policies - so you know whether the various sites your visiting will protect your privacy to the level you want, without having to read through the long, boring, and confusing policies yourself. The article linked to here does a good job explaining some of the reasons why this might not be such a good thing - saying that the standard is too confusing, and not complete enough to really protect privacy. Instead, it could just make people think their privacy is protected.
