3G Expectations Reset

from the well,-it's-about-time dept

A short roundup of this year's CTIA conference pointing out that all the wireless carriers have finally realized what everybody else knew all along: they had been vastly overhyping 3G wireless technology. It's still a very expensive proposition to create real 3G networks, and it's unclear if the carriers can get back the revenue to make it worthwhile. Especially in the US, there hasn't been very much demand for the services. The problem is that for years the carriers have been making it sound as if we're all going to have lightening fast internet access from anywhere on any devices. They're not in a position to deliver that, and everything else they deliver doesn't live up to that hype. Overpromising and underdelivering doesn't make for a very happy market.

    Hey Mike,

I agree three G is way over hyped however, where 3G may fail (due to price issues), 2.5G may be just the answer. Here in the UK it may soon look promising.

We all want faster internet connections although 3G may not be a reality for all in the UK I live in London and have good 3G coverage almost everywhere. One day it will be reality, how soon I am not so sure.
