The Oscars Get Napsterized

The Economist is running a short article about what the movie industry should do about file trading. I find it amusing that they mention (with apparently no irony at all) that four-fifths of a film's revenue comes after it's theatrical release thanks to things like home video sales and rentals. They even say that the industry "relies" on this revenue. It wasn't that long ago that the MPAA and folks like Jack Valenti were telling us that home video would absolutely destroy the movie industry. Oops. Now it's file trading that's going to destroy the industry... Hmmm... The article does go on to point out the problems with Hollywood's current plans to offer their own online movie viewing system, but does little to suggest a solution.
