Weapons Grade Stink Bomb

from the whatever-works dept

Apparently a bunch of scientists are trying to figure out what the worst smells are so they can make a stink bomb. It sounds like a joke, but apparently, they're serious. They're trying to figure out which smells automatically cause people to run away, so that it can be used to disperse crowds. The biggest concern seems to be figuring out how to "contain" the odors until they're ready. I'd hate to be the "smell tester" on that project.

    fun smells...

    by Anonymous Coward

Some of this research has been done before. One of my more memorable experiences was having had the opportunity to smell the chemical that is added to gas pipelines... It's added in unbelieviably small quantities and has a persistant annoying quaility that is difficult to ignore. If the dosage was upped, I'm pretty sure that it would repell all but the most hardened anti-globalization freak.

Also buteric acid... you know... vomit. Had a prof in hs that would dose a filter pad with it and then drop it in the locker of the kid he hated the most... on monday, he'd come in early and remove the filter pad (teachers have the locker combos)... meanwhile everything in the kid's locker smells like a frat house after homecomming without the incriminating mess.
