Power Line Connectivity

from the I'll-believe-it-when-I-see-it dept

For years I've been reading stories about how power line connectivity could be a serious broadband alternative to DSL or cable modem service using your regular power lines. Every time I read one of those articles I also hear about how experiments have shown that it really doesn't work. If it's been talked about for so many years, and there's still no proof-of-concept, I'm no longer holding my breath that it will ever work. However, this article (again) claims that it's really close (really) to being a reality in the US. This strikes me as particularly odd, since all the other reports I had read said it made a lot more sense in Europe - and it was unlikely to ever work in the US.

    Mike:
Networking through the powerlines in the streets will never happen (unless its through the fiber line running down the middle of them). Networking through the power wiring in your home is already working, but its unclear whether this will ever get any significant traction given the growing wireless alternatives.
