How Europe Destroyed Their Wireless Sector
from the license-fees,-license-fees,-license-fees dept
An interesting NY Times article about how Europe is going to fall behind in the wireless race due to the ridiculous amount of money overspent buying up 3G spectrum. This has been talked about before, but the NY Times article is a good summary of what happened, and why Europe will suffer for it. Basically, the European carriers spent so much, that there's not much money left to do other things to bring about growth in the wireless market. At the same time, companies that overspent have been forced out of business, driving down competition and the incentive to offer better deals and packages to consumers. Basically, some European governments raked in an awful lot of cash for themselves, and helped to possibly cripple an industry.
