Porn Sites Snapping Up Expired Domains
from the how-nice dept
It's great to know that porn operators are such friendly sorts of people. It seems there's big business these days in waiting until local governments, churches, or non-profit organizations forget to renew their domain registration - and then snapping them up and turning them into porn sites. How pointless is this? Do they really think that the people who used to come to a site to figure out where they had to pay their parking ticket or what time Wednesday night bingo started are suddenly going to stick around for the porn? Like any sort of bad advertising, forcing people to a site by tricking them seems like a waste of time. Of course, the porn site operators don't really care about all that - and are really doing this to extort money from the organizations they took the domains from - who are having all sorts of trouble trying to get them back.
