So, Amazon.com has launched a version of their site for the visually impaired. They've done away with graphics and ads, and there's just a tiny bit of text - so that screen reading software can work on it without any problems. However, it's still fully functional. It's actually, not a bad way to surf Amazon.com and avoid all the extra stuff they throw at you. (Before the crazies among the readers come out screaming at me for "promoting" Amazon.com or whatever, if you don't like Amazon.com, then ignore this - I just thought it was amusing that I find the site for the visually impaired a hell of a lot more useful than the regular vision-acceptable version).

    At first glance this does seem like a nice fast way to navigate amazon (especially if you are in broadband hell and forced to use a modem). However, in any of the electronic categories all it gives me is one "recommendation" and 5 "hot sellers"... to get a full list I have to do a search, which of course turns up false positives.

    Maybe they'll fix that...

    Maybe it's not broken, at least since it's really intended to be for the visually-impaired, not the bandwidth-impaired, which have subtly different requirements. For anyone using screen reading software or displaying everything in 72-point type, less is more.
