Women Impeded By Tech Downturn
from the um...-everyone-is-impeded-these-days dept
A new report says that women are having a tougher time these days getting ahead in Silicon Valley. For example, it's tough for women to get venture funding these days. Of course, the report doesn't say if they did a "control" group study on men, because, I think just about everyone has been "impeded" in some way over the past couple of years, due to the downturn. Though, the article does make the valid point that in tough times, business deals seem to get done by who you know, and so some people are falling back on the "men's club" atmosphere of the people they've known for years. As an aside, there's a separate story at the end of that article that's pretty funny. It talks about Solectron's Chairman and CEO, Ko Nishimura, who seems like quite the quirky guy. Besides wearing the exact same outfit to work everyday (he didn't want to have to figure out what to wear each morning), he also had a paper route in his neighborhood for six years in the mid-90s, while he was COO of Solectron. His sons went off to college and Nishimura was worried about the paper's customers in the neighborhood, so he and his wife kept the paper route going - riding around the neigborhood on bikes at 5am each morning. He even won an award for "carrier of the week".
