Censoring Kids Access To The Internet Can Be Dangerous

A good article pointing out the potential downsides to schools and libraries that filter online content for students. Besides the obvious problems of blocking plenty of completely legitimate sites, and not blocking plenty of questionable sites, the internet may also help kids learn social skills. Personally, I think that as adults, we seem to forget what it was like to be a kid - and assume that absolute protection is the best way to raise kids. Kids (of just about any age) are much smarter than we always make them out to be. They are amazingly resilient, and can process information very well. To think that some kids seeing some "bad" things online is going to destroy them is silly. Over protecting them, and making them think that this stuff doesn't exist is only going to cause more problems when they realize what this world is really like.
