Digital Dave And NBA.com

from the hooping-it-up-online dept

An interesting look at how NBA commissioner David Stern has pushed internet initiatives throughout the basketball league. They also explain how he intends to make money off of it, without cannibalizing their (extremely lucrative) TV deals. Should be fun to watch what happens. However, I still don't see how broadcasting games over the internet really interferes with TV deals. First off, I'm not completely convinced that people want to watch sports games on their computer (though, if it's not available anywhere else, I certainly would watch certain games). But, I don't see where that cuts into the revenue. I imagine they'd use the same broadcast, and just repurpose it for streaming - which would mean that the broadcast would get more eyeballs, meaning the network could charge more for commercials, meaning the NBA can charge more for broadcast rights.
