Microsoft Said / AOL Said

from the does-anyone-else-care? dept

An Industry Standard article looking at why the talks between AOL and Microsoft (concerning putting the AOL icon on Windows XP) broke down. Mostly the argument seemed to be based on whether or not AOL could ship Real Networks software with their own product - but the specifics differ. In the end, though, does anyone really care about an argument between two huge monopolies? I'm not sure why either side even bothered with the negotiations in the first place. The two companies hate each other, Microsoft doesn't need to include AOL, and AOL can simply make deals with the hardware makers to include their icon (as if there aren't enough CD-ROMs out there already).
