Forget about Bluetooth. How about a ubiquitous wireless standard that transmits data using fluorescent lights? Ok, so it's not two-way communication yet, but hopefully the hardware is really cheap...

    The first time that I read about this "technology", the application was for grocery store item smart tags - electronic price tags that would be updated via the lighting in the store, saving clerks from trips to the aisles to keep prices / sale items up to date. Neat concept, but still overkill.
