Cross Gender Online Game Players

from the haven't-we-heard-this-all-before? dept

It seems that every few months one news source or another discovers the fact that some players of online games are the opposite gender online from what they are in real life. This, of course, brings up all sorts of psychological questions for the young reporter who thinks they've found a great story. The end result? There are plenty of people who play opposite genders online, and it seems that strereotypes float over into cyberspace as well. Women are expected to be more chatty, men are more competitive. Men characters tend to be helpful to women characters - though they often expect stuff in return. People also seem to have a fear of being "outed" if they're playing an opposite gender, as they think their online friends won't trust them any more.
