For all the joking that people make about internet connected appliances, here's one application that might be useful: internet connect washing machines at dorms in colleges. This way people can check to see if there's a free machine - and then the system will email them when done so they know to go get their clothes. As someone who still remembers trying to find the machine with the least amount of underwear in it to move so I could actually do my laundry - I think this would have been useful.
