Salon is running a two part story on how DivX hopes to avoid the same mistakes made by MP3.com and Napster with their movie compression format. This part of the story, though, is mostly about the history of DivX which really isn't anything new.

    What's with the name DivX? Is there some link between this codec and the failed DVD competitor?
